Don't Try So Hard

So I guess it started with the whole Colbie song and video. And now the theme is popping up all over the internet with all kinds of different hashtags. Today, some of my favorite blogland friends are hashtagging #donttrysohard and we're all linking up to show our bare faces!  A quote from Kate's post "set aside the filters, the makeup, the staged photos, etc. for just a day and remember that underneath all the props and careful planning, we too are so beautiful!"

She makes a really great point about the props and careful planning. In blogland (and pretty much the land of Instagram) we take 32906728 pictures of the same thing until we get the perfect angle with the perfect lighting. And then we add the perfect filter and adjust the brightness and sharpening until that ONE photo is perfect perfect perfect. Because let's be honest, the blogging community, almost all of social media and basically the entire internet is all visual. Photos everywhere! And there's tips and tricks all over the place on how to make your photos more appealing. See also: Pinterest.  So how can we not fall into this trap of "perfection"?

I'm one of those people. I have millions of multiples in my camera roll. I have a handful of photo editing apps on my phone. And I LOVE wearing makeup. I love buying it, I love applying it, I love walking out the door with it on, I love how it enhances my features and I love how it makes me feel so pretty. But today I'm gonna join in on what can also be nicknamed as "no makeup monday" and not try so hard with a face full of makeup and 295793 selfies and then pick the best one and use 2 apps to edit it. I'm just gonna go balls to the wall and bare all for you.

DeNiro was not interested in being part of this. He was busy doing cat stuff. As you can see. It's funny, I actually did take more than one selfie because the first one I took I noticed he was sleeping behind me, so I had to scratch that and have a do-over by pointing and laughing at him. Twice.

Ah, Sunday scrub day. Lounging around lazy and carefree feels so good. As much as I love makeup, I really do also enjoy a fresh clean face and letting it get a break from all that gunk.  Which is how I am 90% of the time when I'm home.

If you're feeling brave and wanna stand tall in your natural beauty, come show us all what you got! Join me in linking up with Kate, Jackie and Nicole!

Bye beautiful! xoxo

  1. I think you look great, like you're having a ton of fun with just your cat, in your comfy clothes- what could be better than that?! Idk if I'm brave enough for my own pic!!!

  2. YESSS! I love this. You are SO right. I have so many "multiples" in my camera that never see the light of day because they aren't perfect. I admit that I've often tried to stage the perfect "desk" photo and then given up after 30 minutes because it wasn't pretty enough! Grr! Blogging makes us crazy.

What is also going to make me crazy is how pretty you look sans makeup! Seriously! Your skin is to die for... and that smile! Oh girl! I couldn't help but laugh along with you at DeNiro! HAHA! I don't think there is a damn thing wrong with loving makeup and loving new products -- but I think we should also love what's underneath them! And you have A LOT to love girl!

Thank you SO much for linking up with us!

  4. hahaha it's funny you mention the desk because i've done this whole "perfect" madness on objects also. and FOOD! so many pictures of food that just never made it to instagram. and then when i randomly scroll thru my photos i'm like why do i have 16 pictures of a bowl of oatmeal?! LOL. social media and technology has made us all unknowingly kinda creepy haha.

thank you! <3 i actually have been working really hard to fix my skin over the last few months and shockingly, it's working! i still have some dark spots that i still need to do something about but for the most part, my skin has kinda had a rebirth if that even makes sense. and now that i think about it, if it hadn't, maybe i wouldn't have even joined in on this link up. how sad. damn those insecurities!

i'm glad you did this link up, i've only made it thru a couple blogs so far but it's so awesome to see everyone in their natural state and what their story is with the post. :)

  7. I agree that it has almost become a "fad" to not wear makeup - and I think there are pros and cons to that argument. On one hand, we're empowering women, because we are all beautiful with or without makeup and everyone deserves to think that. On the other hand, we're chastising the women who DO want to wear makeup because now, all of the sudden, wanting to wear makeup means you're insecure or you don't like the way you look and I think that's a load of shit! I think we should be able to do whatever we want without being criticized. Either way, you look great!

  8. that's true, it's that we don't like how we look OR we're wearing it for guys. bahaha NO. make up is FUN. it's fun to shop for and to learn how to use. i watch beauty gurus on youtube because i truly enjoy learning tutorials and trying new products. i don't "do it for guys", my boyfriend prefers me without it. and i don't do it because "i'm ugly". yea it makes me feel prettier, but i don't think i'm not pretty without it. oh god now that sounds like "so you agree, you think you're really pretty?" hahaha
    thank you <3
