How Do I Apple?

The small child in me is jumping with excitement because I bought an iMac! The sad child in me wants to cry because I.DO.NOT.UNDERSTAND. How do I copy and paste with keyboard commands? Why did I scroll down on the mouse but it chose to scroll up? What the fuck is Cloud and how on earth do I do something with it?  Apple, why you so confusing?  Ok, I know I can google all this stuff. But I'm sure some of you have made the PC to Mac jump before. Was it easy for you? Am I just a dummy? I know I have about zero patience to learn things like this, but really, why is it so ... backwards?

I figured out the mouse scrolling thing. But WHAT IS CLOUD? When I got my iPhone last year, I was so utterly confused about cloud, I just disabled it and moved on with my life. Now, I clearly need it. Also, why is iPhoto so confusing? Why can't it just be simple like Windows? [insert Peevy whining...whaaaah!].  I guess I have a lot of tutorials to start watching. I'm way too PC brainwashed to figured this out quick.

My biggest issue though, photo editing. At some point last year I posted that I wanted to learn Photoshop. I got the trial and basically gave up immediately because like I said, I have zero patience. It was SO fucking hard. Like dumb hard. But now, I have to have it. Since about 2004 I've been using Corel Paint Shop Pro and I'm great at it and I'm comfortable with it and I've used several versions and I just love it. But it's sadly not compatible with Mac. Sad because I paid for that shit, and sad because ugh I have to learn Photoshop now. HELP. When I tried it out last year, I went on so many tutorials from Pinterest and YouTube and I just could not get it.

Does anyone have Photoshop? Which one do you have? Because another confusing thing is when I got to the site, there are SO MANY OPTIONS. How do I know what's right? The $9.99 a month one? Or will that limit me? How big of a package should I get? THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID. I'm just so confused you guys, and I'm in need of some serious guidance. If you have any "easy to understand" tutorials, please, I bow down to you, send them my way!

/End of desperate cry baby post.

  1. I knew nothing about Mac's when I got one but my husband was an Apple head so he helped me through. I still don't get the cloud sadly. As for photo editing I just hit the enhance button on every pic. It does a pretty good job of brightening it up. That's the quick fix tab. Then there is a 2nd tab that has slightly more advanced yet still easy functions like warming up or cooling down a pic and some filters. I like Mac's but I have to say the one thing I miss about windows is well...the windows.

  2. It's taken me awhile to get used to -- and I'm still figuring it out! But now when I sit down in front of a PC i feel very awkward!

  3. I'm not really any help, I just want to commiserate. I get mad even just HEARING about the stupid Cloud, it's so confusing. I also disabled it on my phone.

  4. I can't speak to the photo editing programs. The Cloud, while I'm still not sure I understand it, I don't think you actually USE it, or DO anything with it, it's just there and all your stuff automatically backs up to it. Don't quote me though cause I could easily be doing it wrong :). Keyboard shortcuts are easy peasy, they're the same as on a PC (Command X to cut, Command C to copy, Command V to paste). If you google Apple Keyboard Shortcuts there's tons of stuff that comes up. I printed out a table and used that as a reference for a while when I was just starting. Also, know that your "Finder" is equivalent to a PC's "My Computer". That's where you'll go to find/open programs. And also, the X and _ symbols on the top right don't actually close a program, it just closes the window. You have to go to "quit" the app for it to actually close. Command Q will do that for you :) ...Hope things start making sense for you soon!!

  5. I have the $9.99 membership for photoshop and lightroom, and that is more than enough for me. I don't have time or patience to go through and figure out every little nuance on my own either, so I use Sarah's (Venus trapped in Mars) tutorials ALL THE TIME. I don't understand the Cloud either, because it's confusing as all shit. Apparently, that's the premise of that new movie "Sex Tape" that comes out this weekend, so at least you know you're not alone in that. I don't have a Mac, but I have an iPad and iPhone, and that's plenty for me because Macs are confusing to me. And also, the "insert peevy whining" comment made me LOL so hard. Good luck!

  6. hahaha peevy whining, love. I switched to a mac, but it was a few years ago. I remember thinking it was easy and now that I read your post, I realize I don't actually know how to use cloud, I kinda just set up the basics and now it just does it's thing? And I don't edit photos so... maybe I don't actually know how to use my mac... but I can surf the internet and watch cat videos so what else really matters, right?

  7. I decided not to use iPhoto, it's confusing.
As far a learning photoshop, I would just learn things as you need to do them. It's much easier that way.

  8. I always had a problem trying to get used to all the shortcuts so I stayed a PC girl. Hopefully it becomes easier.

  13. i don't think anyone understands the cloud lol.

  16. that's what i kinda thought the cloud was but while i had it enabled nothing was ever in it. my contacts, photos, music, nothing is there. so i was like what's the point? lol
i'm gonna print out a shortcuts list too! on PC it's Control instead of Command so at first I was using Control on the Apple keyboard and nothing was happening haha
thanks for the Quit tip! i would have had no idea :)

  17. i downloaded the trial again and played with it last night, i'm already over it. the program that I'm use to using is so simple. like for example, skin smoothing, there is an option for it and settings within. SO EASY. but in photoshop, i had to search a tutorial and learned that the "easy" way is really all these layers and steps within layers and i was like WTF why isn't there just a button for this?! so i'm already done with it. haha

  18. cat videos is pretty much all that matters! haha

  19. if you don't use iPhoto, what do you do? i hate it because on Windows i have all my photos in certain folders and stuff, and on Mac it's like they're just all right there in your face and i have no idea how to get them organized how i want. i need a serious dose of some patience haha

  20. i hope so too! i just have no patience for anything lol

  25. I just have a folder on my desktop just like I would on a Windows computer. I drug over my photos into that folder and completely deleted iPhoto off my mac. I hope that helps.

  26. First of all - loving the "that's what she said joke" - my roommate is constantly yelling at me for making them all the time!

Anyway, I switched from a PC to a Mac my sophomore year of college, and it can definitely be confusing sometimes. My biggest thing is that nothing is compatible - like nothing you write or make on mac is gonna work on a PC unless you convert it, and even then it's iffy. So that makes me crazy.

As for the cloud - I really still don't fully understand it. Basically, what I understand is that if I put something in my calendar on my computer, it will also be on my iPhone, iPad, and iPod. Which is pretty cool I guess, but that's as far as my understanding goes. (also, sidebar: don't switch from iPhone to any other phone. It's hell getting texts from anyone with an iPhone because Apple has iMessage and nobody else is compatible) Anyway - point being, it can be kinda cool, but I don't think you actually NEED it. I don't actively use mine, at least.

Photoshop is something I've been struggling with myself - I don't know whether I should buy it, because I'd really like to learn blog design, but Photoshop is scary! Ughhh...

Okay, sorry for the super long comment.

  27. I just switched from PC to Mac a few months ago. I remember my first day. Holy F. Thankfully I had a friend that taught me to switch things around with the mouse and to change what the Command and Control buttons do. So now Ctrl + F is the same as Control + F.

As for photoshop, just Google it. That's what I did. In fact I google how to do something on photoshop tonight. Rome wasn't built in a day. You'll get the hang of it!

  28. Unfortunately I have not one single tip for you since I am still a PC user, but I will say good luck!!
